Hello everyone, my name is Sita Lohachitranont. I am taking a year off from Matthayom Watnairong School, right now I’m an exchange student in Iowa, Louisiana, United States. I’m attending Iowa High School in grade 9th.

First of all, I’m just a fifteen-year-old Thai girl who had a big dream, I honestly thought that living somewhere else for a while with foreigners would be the coolest thing in the world. Anyway it was a hard decision because of several reasons. Luckily my parents are always supportive of me. They gave me advice and direction as much as they can, so I decided to be a part of this program.

In school, I feel like I’m in a collage because students are be able to choose whatever we want to learn for what will need in life. I would say this year is also my most educational year too, of course it’s not about dealing with tons of homework but the way to study more effectively. In addition, I’m very impressed with people’s responsibility and their manners in school. I’ve made some great new friends and met many fantastic people. There’re some other exchange students from many countries in the same area. I realized that everybody can be friends, although we may come from vastly different cultures. It is fun when we’re together, we see how religion, skin tone or height don’t matter.

Here we have many events and special days, such as Homecoming, Halloween, Christmas, Thanksgiving, along with football games and stuff like that, so I have lots of opportunities to try new things for the purpose of engaging a unique experience, which make me get to know myself better.

I’m thankful that I am in a good and caring place with a huge amazing family. They welcomed me with open arms and treat me like their own. My host mom works for the agency I am with, thus she knows exactly how to raise international students. My host dad is super nice. He can cook really well, especially his cookies are the best. There are three marvelous kids and a whole bunch of pets In the house. They’re generally crazy, but sometimes even pretty cool. I love when we all sit on the couch and have a movie night together.

Being nine thousand miles away from home is not easy. As an exchange student, this program let me walk out of comfort zone and makes me grow. I learn so much about myself, things around me, as well as life skills.

The local coordinator is always there for me whenever I need her, making sure that I’m adjusting and enjoying my stay here. In my opinion, It’s worth it to build a life for 10 months that will be with me forever.
